| Availability of Patient Populations (Adult, Strong) | Patients served by VA Maine are predominantly rural, low-income Veterans, which provides extensive opportunities to work with a diverse patient population presenting with various clinical conditions. Residents will frequently encounter and assess patients with dementias, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD), and substance-induced dementia. Additionally, there will be significant exposure to cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These varied interactions allow residents to develop and refine their skills in assessing and treating complex cases, enhancing their clinical expertise and competency in neuropsychology. |
| Availability of Patient Populations (Adult, Moderate) | While not extensive, there are often opportunities to gain exposure to patients with a variety of other complex conditions. Residents may work with individuals diagnosed with progressive or secondary-progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other inflammatory conditions, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), seizure disorders, and CNS metastases or primary neoplasms. Additionally, there may be cases involving immunocompromised patients or those with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These additional clinical exposures contribute to a comprehensive training experience, ensuring that residents become proficient in managing a wide range of neurological and psychiatric conditions. |
